Sky has announced to their customers that line rental charges will increase by 90p a per month from the 1st December. Their justification for this is that they want to keep improving the service they offer to their customers, this includes investment in four new UK call centres to improve customer service. The broadband charges will not increase at this time neither will call plan charges (such as Sky Anytime).

Customers that have chosen to pay for their line rental 12 months in advance will not be affected by this increase until the their prepaid period comes to an end. Other increases include the call connection fee which changes to 15p for non-inclusive calls. Rates to UK mobiles will be charges at 12p/min at all times.

BSkyB’s operating profit for the last 12 months was in excess of £1.3bn* and the line rental increase will bring in an estimated £4m of monthly revenue.

A Call Happy spokesperson said "It's another blow for consumers, it appears that there is no competition with regards to call prices with the major service providers. When BT announce a price increase, it isn't long before Sky and Talk Talk follow their lead. Through de-regulation prices should be driven down but we are seeing similar occurrences in the energy industry where everyone follows the leader. We are seeing more and more customers seeking the services of smaller service provders to try and keep their telephone and broadband charges affordable".
